Funding makes Food more Fun

In # 8: Food safety: who is responsible? by Kiera0 Comments

Dear editor Dean Friggenschmitter, I am writing to you today because we do not have enough funding for the USDA food safety research. I believe that it is necessary for the government to help out with these funds since it affects all people in the long run. People are getting sick and dying from these outbreaks. In order to prevent these illnesses from breaking out it is important to get more funding. Having safe food to eat is a huge priority to all mankind. Not only does it come back to the food safety department when something goes wrong, but also the government for not supporting enough funding in order to prevent these outbreaks. According to the information I have been provided with, “the budget for 2018 is approximately $25-30 million” which is not that much money when you think about it. This money goes towards research in order to find out what is wrong and or what needs to be fixed in foods in order to ensure that they are safe for consumers to consume. But once there is …

Trees are the key to Sustainability

In # 5: Sustainability by Kiera3 Comments

It is important to take care of the environment and become more sustainable. This trend has caught on to many people as well as food and beverage companies. These companies are trying to make their products in the most sustainable ways. These ways differ for each company, which is why the one that is going to be discussed is Clif Bar & Company. Clif Bar & Company is being sustainable by doing their project “Think like a Tree” Think like a Tree is a project to make the Clif Bar & Company more sustainable. This project helps with sustainability because they are using organic ingredients (“baked with clean, renewable energy”), packaging their goods environmentally friendly, and delivering their products with transportation that does not pollute. All of these ways to become more sustainable make a huge impact in the company. Since the company uses organic products they save money on chemicals that are used on products which betters the environment. Also, since the products are baked with renewable energy it is not harming the environment. Renewable energy is great because …

Organic is a Powerful Word

In # 3: Organic foods - up close and personal by Kiera4 Comments

In all honesty, I never imagined myself walking into a Whole Foods store willingly. The only time I have been there before was when my neighbor would drag her daughter and me after practice to go with her to buy groceries. I remembered it all being food that my parents would never typically purchase because all the labels looked so healthy. Give or take I was only the age of 10 at the time so I didn’t know much except for what the packages looked like. Going to Whole Foods again has made me realize that my perception as kid is probably what majority of people see as well in these kind of stores. I would like to discuss first of all about how nutritious they make the whole store seem. As soon as you walk in they try to trick you to think that everything in their store is a healthy product. You might think I’m over exaggerating, but seriously it’s like they had a machine malfunction and label everything with “organic” at that store. No matter where my …

Put an end to Obesity

In # 2: Junk Food Dissuasion by Kiera1 Comment

Obesity is a major problem in America and it needs to be put to an end. With this disease being directly related to the consumption of food, I have come up with a few solutions that could help solve this issue. First, I think that foods should be labeled with the accurate serving size per person. This makes it easier for the consumer to tell how many calories they are actually consuming inside of them. I think that majority of people are too lazy to calculate it currently (because of the inaccurate serving sizes) or just glance at it and think that’s how much they are going to eat. Calorie consumption has a huge impact on how much a person is going to weigh and with proper labels I think that this problem could be fixed. Second, I think that unhealthy foods should be placed on higher shelves at stores. Most of the time people shopping are in a hurry and want to get done as soon as possible. By placing junk food on higher shelves where consumers cannot reach …

Authentic or not I love them

In # 1: You are what you eat, Leftovers by Kiera2 Comments

My mouth is already dripping from just thinking about the smell that was wandering throughout my house. I had never smelled this juicy, mouthwatering food before in my life so I jolted myself out of bed to head down to the kitchen. My mom was hovering over the stove while I tried to peak over her shoulder to see what the delicious smell was. After her getting annoyed with my breath tickling her neck she asked me what I wanted. I told her I was curious what she was making. She looked at me and told me that she was making tacos. Tacos was the delightful smell that I kept wanting to breathe in. Yes, I said tacos. I never thought that ground beef and a packet of seasoning could impact my life so greatly. Throughout the years from when I first found out what tacos were (I was 7), I learned how to make them myself. One day while I was making them for lunch, my mom asked me if I knew what culture tacos even came from. Of …
