Certified Humane Label and Logo

In # 4: Organic foods and ethical labels by Zoe

Pete and Gerry’s Organic Eggs, which are found at stores like Whole Foods, have the label of “Certified Humane- Raised and Handled”. The Certified Humane label is a certification from the non-profit organization Humane Farm Animal Care and is dedicated to improving the lives of animals that are used in food production. This label is endorsed by many animal welfare groups. The Certified Humane- Raised and Handled program is a voluntary certification program that requires farmers to comply with set standards in order for their products to have the Certified Humane label and logo on the product.

The goal of the organization is to demand more responsible animal practices for animals that are used in food production. This certification assures consumers that animals are never kept in cages or crates and that the animals are free to do what comes naturally to them. Animals must also be fed feed without antibiotics or growth hormones. All slaughter practices must be in compliance with the North American Meat Institute Standards. The organization is also committed to giving farmers fair prices for their animals and products.

In 2021, over 301 million animals were raised under the Certified Humane program which grew from over 259 million animals in 2020. The organization sells products in 24 countries such as the U.S., Canada, and China, among many others. They are hoping that both of these numbers will increase once people understand the importance of their label and organization.
