Clif Bar’s Commitment to Sustainability

In # 8: Sustainability by Ivory

Clif Bar, the protein bar made from plants and other organic ingredients, is more than just a quick snack or part of a pre-workout routine. They are also dedicated to responsibly sourcing their ingredients as well as committing to sustainability. The key factors of their sustainability program includes using sustainable packaging, zero waste bakeries, climate-neutral business practices, and using renewable energy.

Sustainable packaging is a major factor to their zero-waste commitment. Clif Bar signed the Ellen MacArthur Foundation Global Commitment, which states that by 2025 all of their packaging will be reusable, recyclable, or compostable; a quarter of the plastic used in their packaging will be made from recycled materials; decreasing package size to cut out unnecessary plastic use; and using the labels on the packaging to spread awareness and education on how to recycle. Clif Bar has also added a secondary goal of removing one million pounds of plastic waste from the environment by both reducing their overall plastic use and by actively cleaning waste that is already in the environment. Their zero-waste program also utilizes closed-loop systems for materials to reduce the amount of waste going into landfills and incinerators.

Another factor is climate-neutral business practices. Clif Bar uses 100% renewable energy in its facilities. They use organic ingredients in their products, which reduces the amount of fossil fuels used in the agriculture component of their products. Fifty of their supply chain facilities get at least half of their energy needs met by renewable energy sources. They are also a part of the We Are Still In Leader’s Circle, which is a program that remains in support of the Paris Climate Agreement. Their goals as part of this program are to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from their facilities by half by 2030, reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and encourage the use of electric vehicles and bikes by incentivizing employees to buy electric vehicles, switching all company vehicles to hybrid and electric vehicles, and installing charging stations at their facilities.
