Food: More Than a Need

In # 1: You are what you eat, Assigned Posts by Danny

Since the beginning of time, many factors have attracted organisms together: water, clothing, sleep, shelter and of course, food. People need nutrients to survive, so why not form memories and experiences along with it? Food may be prepared in an incredible number of ways, and food is still developing to this day, it seems unlikely not to take an interest in food. Ever since I was a young child, I’ve been a great fan of food, eating almost everything that I could try, tasting new and strange things due to my curiousness. I put a big part of the blame on my father, not only does he work on a food company, but he also loves to try out new food everywhere and anytime.

Thanks to my father, I have been to plenty of restaurants and have a very extended range of food preferences. Growing up, my dad always took my family and I to various places, like the US or even Turkey, so I have had the privilege of trying a great variety of food, I am very grateful to him in every sense. However, it was not only my dad who introduced my love for food, my mother has been a great cook since I can remember, not once has she missed with a meal of hers, even though I am not such a good cook, I aspire to someday cook and bake like she does. My friends love going to my house and eating my mother’s food, since she has such a wide range of knowledge on different foods and different food cultures, some have even told me it feels like there is a gourmet menu each day, seeing as she likes to prepare all kinds of tasty food.

My parents are my biggest inspiration, I have too much respect for the two of them, they have made me who I am and are the reason I praise food so much, have such a diverse and un-picky palate. They are the reason I ended up on Food Science & Technology. I have only my family to thank for making me who I am today, not to mention my grandmother from my mother’s side introduced me to my favorite sweet food as a child, the sweet crepe, I do not exaggerate when I say it marked a great part of my life, I cherish this memory and forever will, to this day it is still my favorite dessert. I certainly am a person who appreciates food, ingredients, recipes and their creators more than anything, food is a blessing and should be treated as one, it is a playground with unlimited options. Enjoying food might even be my favorite activity, it is a fact of life that every single day, we spend our time in multiple activities-studying, working, exercising, doing something as a hobby, etc.- in order to eat at some point in the day or using our time to put food the table. Nutrients are something we cannot live with, and as mentioned before, why not spice it up a bit? Why should it be only to conserve our health, all living beings should appreciate their food.

I praise food and I believe everybody should, it makes a huge point in our lives, food is a privilege and a life experience, at least for me. Food has taken me to where I am and I am very content with it, I thank my family for making sure I know how precious it is to have food and be able to enjoy it. Food is an experience and may even become a core memory for many, it creates beautiful moments. We should all be grateful for being given the chance to have something so precious.
