GMOreo Labeling

In # 6: Labeling GMOs by Danny

According to the USDA, bioengineered food is “food that contains genetic material that has been modified through certain laboratory techniques and for which the modification could not be obtained through conventional breeding or found in nature”. As you may have noticed, it sounds very similar to what GMOs are, that is because they are synonymous, GMOs have officially been renamed as bioengineered foods since 2022. A federal GMO labeling law was passed in 2016 and since last year, it has become mandatory to include them as bioengineered food rather than GMO.

Many products have implemented this label, an example of a product that has already included it is the cereal: Oreo O’s. Many other cereals have done this as well, Oreo O’s include the label at the bottom of the nutrition facts. This label seems to be enough to satisfy the new law, however, it is harder to spot rapidly, the previous GMO labels used were large and easily seen on the front of the package, so people not aware of the situation may not be able to identify the product as bioengineered due to the label’s placement and size modification. One might argue that bioengineered food sounds friendlier than genetically modified food, but that is up for the buyers to decide. As mentioned previously, the label follows USDA and FDA regulations, but it is less obvious for uninformed people to notice.
