My food story

In # 1: You are what you eat by Alison

I have always loved food. I am definitely a live to eat kind of person. I have had a pretty good relationship with food my whole life. Both of my parents know how to cook and we rarely eat out because we always just make it at home. I know how to cook and bake and I actually really enjoy baking. My dad tells me that when I was a baby, I started eating real food as soon as I could and that as a child, I had a great palette and that I would try everything and eat most anything. Apparently, I am pickier now than when I was little.

My relationship with food has changed a little bit in recent years. I became an emotional eater in high school and have been working on it now in college. I want to get back to a healthier relationship with my food because I will give me a better appreciation for it.

My dad grew up on a dairy farm and I have grown up on a small ranch where we raise breeding and meat animals. My entire family is familiar with food growth and processing. My mom is an agronomist and my dad was an ag appraiser for many years. They have shared their passions with me and I have grown my knowledge and appreciation of the industry through them. I have shown market cattle at the county fair and I understand how and where my food comes from. I believe that gives me a greater appreciation for animal meat since I have trained, fed, and played with my food before sending it be processed.

I am a bit of both sides when it comes to food, I like traditional in some things and innovative in others. I am traditional when it comes to plant-based milks. Not to step on anyone’s toes here but I have a burning hatred of them, they literally have lactose free cow milk now so there is absolutely no reason to drink plant milk, they are literally just pulverized nuts which is so not cool like what if I wanted to eat those. Also, I don’t think they have any nutritional benefit over cows’ milk so you can’t even say that. I do however think that GMOs are beneficial, the more basic ones at least where they have grown plants that produce more food and made them more resistant to poor weather and pesticides.

All in all, I think that I have a very good understanding and appreciation of food and I am excited to learn more.
