The Non-GMO Project and Products

In # 4: Organic foods and ethical labels by Ivory

The product I chose was Sabra Family Size Roasted Pepper Hummus. This product has the GMO-Free label, specifically the Non-GMO Project Verification label. The seal features an orange butterfly on a green plant with the words “Non-GMO Project Verified”. This seal means that the product was produced without the use of genetically modified ingredients. It also says on the front label that this is a gluten free product, and the online photos include vegan, vegetarian, and kosher as well.

The Non-GMO Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to GMO avoidance and allowing consumers to know what products have GMO ingredients or not based on whether the product has the Non-GMO Project seal. Their mission is focused on promoting non-GMO food options, building a non-GMO food supply for consumers, and promoting organic and regenerative agricultural practices. The Verification Standards to maintain the Non-GMO project seal is updated every two years by consulting scientists, experts in the industry, consumers, and producers. The website has the most recent version of the standards available for free to the public. There is a year-round suggestion box on their website as well. These labels appear on many products across the board, such as dips like guacamole and hummus to canned vegetables to coconut oils and more.
