Organic and Ethical Food Labels: Non-GMO

In # 4: Organic foods and ethical labels by Danny

Ethical labels have been becoming very common and widely seen in various products, such an example would be Horizon Organic Fat-Free Milk. This is the milk that I prefer to buy due to its inexistent amount of fat while still managing to be tasty. Horizon Organic Fat-Free Milk contains the labels: USDA Organic, Non-GMO, and claims to be pasture-raised milk. Of the labels mentioned before, I have chosen to dive further into the non-GMO label, or non-genetically modified organism.

A non-GMO label claims the product as being natural and that the producer does not purposefully utilize genetic engineering to modify the product from its natural state. Non-GMO is the traditional form of produce. Non-GMO products are, in most cases, regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Food Safety Inspection Services (FSIS) according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). GMO products are believed by many to be harmful to a person’s health, thus spawning the great number of people who only purchase products with a label that clarifies that what they eat is safe to eat.

However, many others believe non-GMO products are just as safe to eat as GMO products, the website of the organization Non-GMO  Project also claims that non-GMO products assist in ecological harmony, abundant biodiversity, and environmental well-being. In the end, the client is the one who decides whether they want to trust or not products that are GMO or non-GMO.
